closed: the door of no return
Monday, January 18, 2010 at 8:00PM In observation of Martin Luther King Jr Day I thought I'd do a little historical journey back to the country where one of my product ingredients originates: Ghana.
Back in the 17th century, trade in Africa switched from gold, to humans, and the Elmina Castle on the West African coast of Ghana became the trading post where African slaves were captured and sold to Portuguese traders for horses and textile. The slaves were held hostage in the castle until being transported to other countries. The door of the castle, where the exit was made, is known as “The Door of No Return.”
Thankfully that door has been closed to slave trade forever now and we're back to trading gold from the mines of Ghana.
