The Sun? Avoid it... or Embrace it?
Avoiding the sun keeps your body from producing Vitamin D (including too much sunscreen usage!). Too much sun and you burn. In my blog I let you know how we balance the sun exposure dance: SPF? Sunscreen or no Sunscreen?

All Buzz, No Bite

You've got your book, your drink, and begin to settle into the chaise lounge when … bzzzz... SLAP! Those pesky bugs have arrived.

I made the Bug Block hard lotion bar a couple years ago when I discovered that certain essential oils had a bug-repelling effect. Citronella is used commercially in candles and sprays to repel bugs and so I began with that. Cedarwood and lavender also repel bugs, so the perfect balance of the three essential oils produced a woodsy, earthy scent that repel the nasty invaders without repelling your human guests.

But does it work? Every summer my boys lay out the sleeping bags on the deck to sleep under the glow of the moon and stars. The bug block has effectively kept the bugs away and he who forgets to apply, gets bit.

A few weeks ago I had a cloud of mosquitoes hover around me to give it the ultimate test. They buzzed around to annoy me, sometimes landed to scare me, but when I checked an hour later, I did not have one mosquito bite. If I ever figure out a formula to keep them five feet away, I'll let you know. Put up with the buzz, and relax with no bite.

Where all the action is...
Natural Sunscreen
3 T coconut oil
1 T grapeseed or almond oil
1.5 t shea butter
1 t beeswax
1 T zinc oxide
Melt all the above ingredients using a double boiler and blend with a stick blender. Pour into glass jar.
