It IS Your Beeswax Featuring information each month about the lotion ingredients, the countries they come from, and sometimes... a recipe.
The journey of developing the bug bar has been an interesting one. It began last year with simply adding citronella essential oil to the Beesilk bar. This year I decided to play around with the essential oils by researching additional bug repelling oils. I discovered that the following essential oils qualify: peppermint, lavender, rosemary, cedarwood, eucalyptus, and clove but it's recommended that citronella keep a dominating role in the blend of oils.
First I went for spicy: citronella, clove and lavender. I personally enjoyed this combo but it earned me a hazard rating of “2” on the Environmental Working Group's cosmetic database (www.cosmeticsdatabase.com). The “2” still qualifies as a low hazard and I shouldn't lose sleep over it, but the clove was the culprit for the bad score, so it was back to the drawing board.
Then I chose woodsy: citronella, lavender, rosemary and eucalyptus. I got feedback that eucalyptus is a common allergenic for some, so I removed it.
In the end, I settled on this combination, and it now joins the ranks with my other products with a low hazard rating of “0”: citronella, lavender, cedarwood. The scent is wonderful – it reminds me of camping on the coast of California, and most importantly, my customers tell me it works to repel not just mosquitoes, but black flies and deer flies.
By the way, if YOUR journey takes you on a vacation outdoors, plan ahead and take a bug bar with you!
