This month I'm loaded with goodies for you. With Mother's Day this weekend, it's a propos to get back to the beginning, so we'll start with the cocoa bean:

From Jungle to Skin – the Cocoa Bean

The EdventureProject, one of the organizations that we sponsor, had the opportunity to learn how the cocoa bean travels from seed to chocolate during their recent stay in Guatemala. Since cocoa butter makes up 1/3 of the Au Chocolat hard lotion bar, I got excited. Here are a few chocolate facts I learned from their video. Did you know:

cocoa pods grow on the trunk of the tree and are harvested year round
cocoa beans are extracted from the pods, dried, toasted (to remove the shells), and then ground into powder (cocoa powder)
cocoa butter is the result of pressing the cocoa beans with a press, extracting the oil.

Whipped Shea Butter Recipe
This makes a beautiful, full-body lotion that's whipped for easy application. In a double-boiler, melt 4 oz shea butter and 1.5 oz coconut oil. Stir. Cool. Then whip using a standing mixer.

I had been reluctant to try any store baby lotions on him because my husband's allergy made me ultra-aware that formaldehyde is often added to baby products, too. I had a hard time getting a good amount of the hard lotion on his face, though. When I opened the hair butter and realized how much easier it would be to apply because of its low melting point I tried that instead. Within 24 hours I saw a drastic improvement to his face!
